this is a traditional technique in most ST3/IT2 clones, where pressing of "4" while in pattern, would play the note that the cursor is on. there's also "8" that plays the "whole column".
the pressing of "4" will also advance to the next row, thus allowing one to "tap" melodies out, and make parameter changes at the same time, thus increasing speed and efficiency at tweaking the preset.
