The direct integrator should produce quite a different output, no?

This has to do with the depth of the ray paths and next event estimation. Take a look at the very top of the integrator plugin documentation page and this chapter of PBRT.
Try to reason about how the rays are constructed: they start from the sensors, hit some surface and scatter into a new direction. At every bounce/hit, we try to connect the ray directly to an emitter. It should be obvious that, for this scene specifically, we can only rarely connect it to an emitter. In fact, you can see this visually in the output of the direct integrator.
