I've tried to use my iPhone7 (fresh software: 11.2.6) on my USB2 and USB3 port too.
The result is:
root@wpeople-desktop:~# ipad_charge
ipad_charge: unable to claim interface: error -6
ipad_charge: Resource busy
ipad_charge: error setting charge mode
ipad_charge: no such device or an error occured

lsusb said:

In fact, it seems like claiming the interface is unnecessary and potentially interferes with existing drivers for the device.
