Authentication against at least the following two protocols should cover most use cases.

OAuth: As in OAuth 2.0, this would allow users to login with a number of different systems (Google, Twitter, GitHub, Discourse, etc.)
LDAP: Users should be able to login with local LDAP credentials as well. This would allow better integration with ActiveDirectory or the OpenNIC membership authentication systems, for example.

Projects to keep watching for the future:

CoreAuth: @CitadelCore/CoreAuth. Unfinished, but may be in future use by parties we want to partner with -- don't add via PR yet.
