Hi, I think we are missing terms that cover USV in L06 but shall we create a generic USV ones or are we best narrowing down to the types that are commonly used in oceanography? like e.g. sail drones?
See also GCMD for alignment e.g.: https://skosmos.aeris-data.fr/gcmd/en/page/?uri=https%3A%2F%2Fgcmd.earthdata.nasa.gov%2Fkms%2Fconcept%2Fbf17bbac-0fc9-48b3-9b03-bd780ffe1eb0
but is "Saildrone" a model or can we have "Sail drones" as types as well? or maybe both!

We do have autonomous surface water vehicle
https://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L06/current/3B/
Which has a sameAs mapping to
http://mmisw.org/ont/ioos/platform/unmanned_surface_vehicle

The Autonomous Platforms Working Group (BODC + MARS) have been consulted, and would be happy that the description of this generic L06 is both synonymous with Unmanned Surface Vehicle, and adequately covers Sail Drones, which have the same principle of operation.

The suggestion however would be to EITHER (1) change ASWV to USV, or (2) deprecate ASWV and replace it with USV, as this term is used more frequently in the community. The preference would also be to use the gender-neutral term 'Uncrewed' over 'Unmanned', but include unmanned in the description to aid discoverability.

The resulting term is therefore proposed as follows:
Preflabel - uncrewed surface vehicle
Altlabel - USV
Definition - An unmanned autonomous or remotely operated vehicle, vessel, or drone, operating on the sea surface with no human occupants.

@gwemon to advise on procedural course of action (replace vs deprecate) in this instance.

Thank you @JordanAthertonNOC It looks like https://vocab.nerc.ac.uk/collection/L06/current/3B/ was what I was looking for! I agree that it covers USVs and Saildrones.
I'll think about how to handle the changes you are proposing. Maybe a ticket to bring for discussion to our next VMG meeting? Use of AltLabel and improved description might be all that is needed specially as we have a sameAs mapping to USV already.

the unmanned/uncrewed terminology might require us to consider the usage of "unman"-like terms across L06 and other collections before a decision can be taken. Could you do this @JordanAthertonNOC and we can discuss at the next VMG meeting?

Actioned. Will leave this ticket open until we've had the meeting and a decision has been agreed.
