Single Sign-On (SSO)

Removing barriers to participation.

It's not a straightforward thing to achieve, but we're going to make it happen. Our goal is when a learner or an educator signs up to one of our services, they can use the same credentials to log into all of our services to remove hassles. Benefits us, too, because it reduces complexity in the long run and the administrative overhead of account access support requests.

For those interested, we're currently pursuing a solution based on the OAuth2 authorisation protocol, using our multi-site WordPress Course site as the Authenticaion source.

This is a work-in-progress example of what it'd look like (we'd add some OERu branding to make it look more obvious) - rather than typing in their name and email address, and having to come up with yet another username and password, any existing OERu course user could simply click that button which would take them back to the Course.oeru.org site (for which they'll already have credentials) and simpley say "yes, use these credentials to access this other OERu site". If they're already logged into the Course site, they'll immediately be transferred, already logged in with a valid user, to the new site.

Analytics

Tracking the usage patterns of OERu technologies, especially activities, quizzes, and assessements.

With any innovation, it's crucial to determine in advance what "success" looks like, and then build into your product the ability to measure its performance so you can determine whether you meet that threshold.

We're working with a company called Lunametrics to integrate into each of our Course sites so that the way users interact with any quizzes included in those courses is recorded (anonymously) and the results can be reviewed allowing us to continually improve the quality of quizzes, their layout, and the questions and answers (both correct and incorrect).

Additional OERu Course exports

We have export to WordPress sites now.

Next steps: export to widely used LMSs or
to static web sites for offline access.

Open boundary courses.

We've already proven the model of repackaging OERu courses, for example exporting them into useful external platforms - we can extend this to provide export to some widely used LMSs, especially with open standard export formats like SCORM.

Similarly, we could repackage courses into static representations that can be distributed and used offline or hosted and used locally in remote communities, removing the need for fast, reliable internet access.

Our disaggregated interaction services enable open boundary courses even in conjunction with closed LMS technologies.

Automated assessment

Crowd sourced "question bank": proven questions (and answers).

Investigate adopting TAO (Open Assessment Technology).

Open standards for quiz markup, like Moodle GIFT format.

Potential revenue stream for partners.

The OERu is already coordinating the efforts of educators to develop Open Educational Resources. Why not ensure that quizzes and assessments created in conjunction with those resources become part of an integrated question bank, suitably categorised to make them searchable and easily recruited into other formulations of assessments. Over time, if we aggregate questions - especially if some of our courses involve learners designing new questions and answers - we can create a valuable resource for online assessments. This is a potential revenue stream opportunity for partners (for cost recovery or profit).

Online assessment services represent a major opportunity in tertiary education. At the moment these services are dominated by proprietary monopolies, so they're a great candidate for a more open, pan sector approach. We think these online question banks could be an extension of WikiEducator. We're also evaluating open source delivery platforms like TAO (Online Assessment Technologies). The beauty of open source is the ease of trialing solutions and being able to discard (without buyer's remorse, those which fail to live up to their promise), or help to build up those which show potential, and to rapidly scale up, with minimal cost or risk, those which demonstrate clear value.

Registered OERu affiliates

A directory of course designers, technologists, and others who have demonstrated they can build excellent resources.

Another opportunity we have is to create a marketplace for the commercial ecosystem surrounding OER development. We can help to promote those who have demonstrated their abiity to create top quality resources or related services including graphic design, video production, or project management.
