The community repo recently had a change merged that indicated that discussions should be disabled by default, but if they are enabled, should be actively moderated. open-telemetry/community#1756

We currently have 9 discussion topics. I argue they overlap with each other and with other more appropriate forums for the topic. I suggest we remove almost all of them to remove duplicate forums for things, and to simplify the maintenance burden. My reasoning for each is below:

  • Announcements - Remove. This includes release announcements which are synchronized to the releases page. Sure it allows commenting, but almost none have any comments. The comments that do exist are probably better suited as issues.
  • API - Remove. This seems to be Q&A specifically related to the API. I don't see why we need to differentiate between this an regular Q&A.
  • General - Remove. All of these fit into the Q&A category.
  • Ideas - Remove. We should use issues for this function.
  • Polls - Remove. We should use issues for this function.
  • Q&A - Keep. We have other Q&A forums, like Slack and Stackoverflow, but this has the unique benefits of being both indexable (i.e. slack convos don't appear in search results) and moderated by us (i.e. we participate in stackoverflow but are not moderators). Its also nice to have Q&A that evolves and lives along side the source code in question.
  • SDK - Remove. This seems to be Q&A specifically related to the SDK. I don't see why we need to differentiate between this an regular Q&A.
  • Show and tell - Remove. The only entry in here would be better suited on the OpenTelemetry blog: https://opentelemetry.io/blog/
  • Suport - Remove. Seems to be a duplicate of Q&A.

So only Q&A would remain.

Ok I see only positive feedback on this so I'm going to go ahead and make the updates and close this issue.
