What's the plan for "logs" branch?

I tried the "logs" branch and appart from one bug which I found (and which I think is already fixed) it works as expected.

What are the plans for the branch now? Do we plan to merge it to main or there is more work expected to be done first?

We try not to merge to main unless the spec is final and after that we are happy with the implementation because the packages have already hit 1.0 and it might be hard to not break stuff every minor release with logs. That said, may be we can merge it under an experimental namespace and explicitly document that it is not covered under stability guarantees. The import paths would look something like:

from opentelemetry.experimental.logs import ...

Perhaps we could do something similar with metrics as well once we want people to try it out and provide feedback. @ocelotl @aabmass

I think this would be great and is explicitly allowed by our versioning policy: https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-specification/blob/main/specification/versioning-and-stability.md#experimental.

We do want people to try it and the barrier to trying is too high if it is a branch.

With metrics we had decided to release an alpha package (1.10alpha for example) that would contain the stable/base library and add metrics on top of that. May be we can release logs as part of that as well so users can use stable tracing SDK and also try out logging. Personally I think that makes more sense but probably having an experimental namespace is a lot easier to manage with two experimental branches (metrics,logs) being released into a single alpha. //cc @open-telemetry/python-approvers

Java doesn't seem to maintain different feature branches. All of the experimental work also exists in main. I am not sure if they have experimental namespace in their sdk.
