There have been many times that we have renamed semantic conventions. Usually this is done via deprecating an old name and adding a new one. With the addition/migration of ECS I think this is going to be a lot more common.
I suggest we introduce an alias concept to the semantic conventions. This can enable multiple names to be used as keys that get automatically mapped to the canonical name.
For cases where units are inconsistent, we could even add a numerical scale to enable automatic conversion between seconds -> milliseconds for example.
If there's enough interest in this idea, I can try to draft up a more detailed proposal.
