I recently discovered cookiecutter and it's doing exactly what we need in a more robust an reproductible way. I suggest we move toward that and stop storing the templates in the lib. We should continue testing them though.

ok change of heart, we should use copier. as copier will support an updating method so new structural changes in applications will be transferable to old ones
