Requirement

https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG22/#text-alternatives

Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.

Current Situation

❌ Aside from user-content, the overwhelming majority of front end content is text, with non-text content as decorative. The audit has found some incorrect markup. While this audit excludes User-Content, we have recognised that the majority of non-text content is user-content and so are updating our alt-text support accordingly.

Support Alt Text for Images

As stated above, we need to support alt-text for images. This will can then be used to support users with:

  • journal logo / header image
  • issue cover images (inc thumbnails)
  • article illustrations
  • news illustrations
  • profile pictures/editorial board profile images
  • sensory specific experiences

It must also enable images to be marked as decorative.
