What's the best way to have configurable options for my plugin?

I see that machine plugins have get_option_info, but what about other types of plugins?

Plover engine server is the only one I know about (plus some other plugins that I wrote recently) that does it, and by storing another (JSON) file in Plover's configuration directory.

plover_console_ui does it too, by modifying plover.config.Config._OPTIONS so Plover writes to plover.cfg.
