bad behavior when the screen width is narrow

The UI allows me to login as lisa and choose Arithmetic has a course and if my window is set wide enough everything comes up. If my window is set narrow however only the central part of the screen (minus both the left and right sections) appears — and since that is initially blank (no detailed problems shown yet) it appears that the entire page is blank. — at first I thought things weren’t working, but once I widened the interface things were fine. This is just UI issue however not a communications issue.
