How bring contributions from account A to account B ?

Hi,

When I started working for my current job I was required to create a separated account on github to work on the organization, then I have a github account named felipeoriani-he which I used to work for this company, instead using my personal one. Now I am leaving this company and I would like all the contributions (commits and pull requests numbers) to be moved to my personal account felipeoriani. To archive it I removed the company email on felipeoriani-he account which I have used to make the commits on the company account and added it into my personal account, but I can't see the commits there.

I found this page about merging multiple accounts but it does not say about contributions stats.

Is there any to do it?

Merging the contribution history from one GitHub account to another isn't a straightforward process because contributions on GitHub are tightly linked to the email address used for the commits. Here is how contribution history works and some steps that might help:

1. Commit Email Linkage: GitHub uses the email address in the commit header to link the commit to a GitHub account. If you want your past contributions to show up on your personal GitHub profile, the email address used for those commits must be added to your personal GitHub account.

2. Adding Emails to GitHub Profile:

   • Go to your GitHub profile settings.
   • Under "Emails," add the work email address that you used for the other account's commits.
   • Verify the email address if required.

3. Past Contribution Recognition:

   • Once you've added and verified your work email to your personal GitHub account, your past contributions will be linked with your account, provided those commits were made in public repositories.
   • For private repositories, the contributions will only show if the repository owner has not disabled email address privacy and you're still associated with that repository.

4. Commit Visibility:

   • Contributions are counted if they meet certain criteria. Review GitHub’s criteria for counting contributions. The email address must be visible in your GitHub profile for the contributions to appear.

5. Retroactive Attribution:

   • Contributions will only appear from the date you've added the email to your profile. Historical contributions beyond the point won't be automatically attributed.

6. Repository Transfer:

   • If you were the sole owner of the repositories, you could transfer them to your personal account. However, this would not work for repositories owned by the organization.

7. GitHub Support:

8. No Merge Option:

   • GitHub currently does not offer a way to merge accounts or transfer the full contribution history (including the activity count/graph) from one account to another.

9. Issues & Pull Requests:

   • As for issues and pull requests, you can't transfer these between accounts. You will retain authorship, but they will remain linked to the original account that created them.

Remember, for privacy reasons, GitHub handles contribution history very carefully, as they need to ensure that the contributor meant to make their email public in connection with the commit. If you no longer have access to the repositories or cannot add your old email to your personal account, there might not be a way to display those contributions on your personal GitHub activity graph.

I have tried it but did not worked. In my professional account I have set the company email on the commits were made using it. I removed the company email from the company github account and added it as an additional email on my personal account, but I can't see the contributions there. I don't think it's possible to move the contributions.

Github should provide some way to archive it, some companies requires extra accounts to work on their organization. I've tried sent a github support ticket, but no anwser so far - in the past they used to anwser.

If there is something I could try, please let me know. Thanks.

I wish I could but it seems to be complicated. I've seen lots of people want this, it should be a feature or easier to perform.

It seems like you're trying to scrape contributions from a private GitHub account. The sync-graph - git-synced script attempts to access the contributions graph by constructing a URL with your GitHub username, and scraping data from https://github.com/${username}?tab=overview&from=${from}&to=${to}. However, if your profile is private or behind a company’s SSO (Single Sign-On), this process won't work. You can see the relevant part of the script in this line.

I encountered a similar issue with my secondary GitHub account, which is tied to a client and requires SSO. When visiting the URL for my profile, I'm redirected to a page like https://github.com/enterprises/{company}/sso?return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2F{username}. To bypass this, I created a custom script based on sync-graph that lets you manually save the profile page as an HTML file and scrape the contribution graph from there. I have not rigorously tested this script but you might want to give it a try. Here is my "manual version of isturiz's sync-graph - git-synced.
