Email: support for 3rd party clients #416
-
I would like to propose another criteria for email providers: whether they support 3rd party clients. For example I think that Mailbox.org supports any 3rd-party client as long as it supports PGP encryption. Protonmail has the "Bridge" to use it with another client on desktops. Tutanota and CTemplar don't support any other clients, it's only webmail or their own apps. Why is this important? Because if the email provider ever goes bust or is taken offline by the authorities (think of Lavabit) then all your emails are gone unless you have a local backup (e.g. Thunderbird). Likewise, if you just want to switch to another provider it may be difficult or even impossible to export your old emails. This should not be a reason to exclude an email provider but there should be a warning. One more thing related to emails: isn't Disroot invite-only? If so I would propose removing it because what's the point of advertising it here when most people can't make an account. |

You're thinking of RiseUp, you can register for Disroot here: https://user.disroot.org/pwm/public/newuser |
