Cannot deliver emails to addresses containing umlauts #2

If I try sending an email to, for example, ä[email protected], I receive the following error:

'to' parameter is not a valid address. please check documentation

I am using version 0.1.1, with Rails 3.2.5. The problem is not manifesting if I'm connecting to mailgun through smtp.
