quarto publish gh-pages not running successfully

Hi everyone,

The contents for my old personal website are in the main branch. I created a new branch 'gh-pages' and pushed my new quarto files to this branch and also changed settings for GitHub Pages as per the instructions in this link: https://quarto.org/docs/publishing/github-pages.html#ignoring-output

Everything works fine until the publishing part. When I try to run 'quarto publish gh-pages' at the end in my Git Bash, I get the following error:

I am using Windows OS and Quarto 1.4.553

I am using Windows OS and Quarto 1.4.553

Could you update to latest Quarto ? Last stable is 1.5 and pre-release is 1.6.

ERROR: The handle is invalid. (os error 6)

A quick google search lead me to this issue in Deno:

• Deno.stdin.setRaw throw error in GitBash Windows denoland/deno#21950

Are you using Git Bash ? Can you try in powershell ?

You could try update Git also (I don't know which version you are using).

Updating Quarto and Git didn't help but running the code in Powershell solved my issue. Thanks!

So it seems to confirm issue with Deno and Git Bash. Good to know !

Hi @cderv , I made some changes to my website. When I try to repeat the same process as stated in the link above, I get an error.

My steps:

After cloning the repo, I perform following commands in Powershell.

git checkout --orphan gh-pages
git reset --hard # make sure all changes are committed before running this!
git commit --allow-empty -m "Initialising gh-pages branch"
git push origin gh-pages

Now I add my new contents to the repo directory on my computer

git commit -m "message" 
git push origin gh-pages 

And I change my page settings in GitHub to deploy from gh-pages branch.

And I checkout to main branch with

git checkout main

and then when I try to run quarto publish gh-pages , I get the following error:

ERROR: The specified path (D:\XXXXXX.github.io) is not a website, manuscript or book project so cannot be published.

Are you calling this from a Quarto project ? do you have a _quarto.yml ? What is the content of you repo ?
Did you change anything in your project regarding this ?

BTW, quarto publish gh-pages should setup for your all the gh-pages branch, etc... For a next website you should no need to do those steps with git manually.
