Come up with a cool effect to "uncover" the map whereever you travel.
Unlocking defined areas would probably be nicer than just a generic radius.
Show big landmarks always? Color in the parts you visited?

Just to add, before we forget:

• The reason for defined areas being preferable is that otherwise, large parts of the map will never be shown.
• One option for colours would be something like the stamen watercolour maps
