It would be nice to have a new release with the latest updates o the library!

I do think we have a few more soundness issues to fix before that (i.e. removing the panics crate-wide that we embarked on some time ago), but it's been a bit too long indeed.

It would be nice to do a release now and bug fix releases afterwards :)

Not if those bugfixes imply breaking API changes. It's been so long, we can wait a little longer instead of rush for a release out of nowhere.
