Email body text not accepting new lines

The email body task option has an build definition custom variable assigned. The variable is set within a powershell script. The variable contains a string with rn as is normal powershell new lines. Upon receipt of the email only the first line shows. How can multi lined text bodies be created in powershell that the email task will recognize. The rn is not working. Thanks
