Because of database issues, deleting accounts is much more hassle than it's worth. I think we can add a field to account objects ("deleted") which will prevent it from showing in account lists

Not yet, that was for Holdings

This would require a fairly significant change, adding a hidden flag to accounts in a similar way as companies
