cipherchecks

visually see issues with supported cipher suites

Python 3.11

Theres a few known tools out there that will check the cipher suites accepted by a system. This is my attempt in making the output of the results more readable.

For example, using sslscan, to only have a list of supported ciphers, you will need to grep for 'Accepted'.

$ sslscan github.com | grep Accepted
Accepted  TLSv1.3  256 bits  TLS_CHACHA20_POLY1305_SHA256  Curve 25519 DHE 253
Accepted  TLSv1.3  256 bits  TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384        Curve 25519 DHE 253
Accepted  TLSv1.2  128 bits  ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256   Curve 25519 DHE 253
Accepted  TLSv1.2  256 bits  ECDHE-ECDSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305 Curve 25519 DHE 253

Accepted  TLSv1.2  256 bits  ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA          Curve 25519 DHE 253

testssl.sh does way more than just listing the accepted ciphers, however the output of that is skewed too.

$ testssl -E github.com

This tool attempts to make the output of the accepted ciphers a little more copy & paste'able.

asciicast

installation

There are two options to run cipherchecks. Either by building the docker container, or by running it from source.

from source

You're going to need to install poetry as it is used to manage dependencies.

git clone https://github.com/sensepost/cipherchecks
cd cipherchecks
poetry install

using Docker

This is currently the easiest and most reliable way to install cipherchecks.

  1. Install Docker and clone the Cipherchecks repo.
  2. Open up a terminal in the cloned repo.
  3. Build the Dockerfile with: docker build -t sensepost/cipherchecks .
  4. Run Cipherchecks with the following command:
docker run --rm -it sensepost/cipherchecks

It's inconvenient to type that whole command each time you want to run Cipherchecks so I'd recommend making a script and adding it to your PATH or just adding an alias in your shell.
