Authenticate a user before publish and subscribe to a room in Socket.io

In Socket.io, is there a way we can restrict client to a particular topic/room only. So whenevr a user subscribe/publish to a room, he should be authenticated before pub/sub action.

On Socket.io I don't see any such thing documented.
