Senbatsu shiai: or elimination shiai are contests on elimination basis. This is referred to as “ladder competition.” Opponents are listed in the form of a “ladder,” more or less on ability. The higher levels are at the top. The idea is to “climb the ladder,” by defeating the person above you and taking their place on the ladder. Usually one can only challenge someone one, two or three “rungs” above him or her. This prevents a person from feeling overmatched.
