The screen freezes for a second, then it fails with a screen saying that a unrecoverable system crash occurred and prompts to go back to the display manager as shown below

Possible to do with menu transparency being on, but can't say for 100%, I can't reproduce under debian with same setup so must be openSUSE related.

Steps to reproduce: Select Granite widgets, then select another widget

Suggestions?

Can confirm crashes are a common occurrence on OpenSUSE no matter the Budgie version.
Steps to reproduce:

  1. Place an icon task list
  2. Unpin 2 icons that come with it by default.
    Done. The session crashed.

This would not be as much of an issue if two subsequent budgie-panel crashes did not take down the entire session with them. If the session can recover from a single crash, there's no reason to believe it cannot handle two crashes that occurred within a short time frame. MATE manages this well, and so does XFCE.
