Escargo

Escargo is a zero-configuration REST API for email. Just spin up the vagrant machine and you can being sending email easily using the endpoint.

Installation

Firstly, ensure Vagrant is installed.

The default vagrant machine in the Vagrantfile hosts the microservice. So, to get set up quickly, run

$ vagrant up

in the project root. If this is your first time running escargo it will take a while for the installation to complete.

Once installation is complete, you should now have an instance of escargo running at http://localhost:5000.

Endpoint

There's really only 1 endpoint for this service:

POST /

However, the power of the request comes from the JSON data in the POST. Since each email server is different, there are are a lot of configuration options. It's recommended to keep the configuration in a file, and pass it in with the rest of the request.

Testing

My original intention was to get 3 vagrant instances up and running for testing:

  1. One instance would send the email.
  2. Another instance would act as the DNS.
  3. A third instance would be the email recipient.

But configuring email is hard, so (for now) testing is best done manually. Copy the file <escargo_root>/assets/tests/example.json to <escargo_root>/assets/tests/config.json and modify to your own needs for a test mail server.

Then run the tests by naviating to <escargo_root>/src/ and running

$ python setup.py test

This will use what's in config.json as the POST data and will verify that the 200 status was returned.
