Is it possible to use the native raspberry camera? If not, any idea on how to adapt this project to do that? Where do I get started? I'm a noob when it comes to raspberry pi.

This is a good idea. I do have a pi-camera that I can test this with. I also want to try with a usb webcam. I imagine it will require some code refactoring. I have some time off over the holidays. I will see what it will involve and keep you updated.
