Why are some of the symbols in the bar not showing up correctly?

Likely, the font you have selected in the bar configuration doesn't contain all of the required fonts. Try to use a font that includes all glyphs (such as Inconsolata) or specify FontAwesome as fallback (e.g. font pango:DejaVu Sans Mono, FontAwesome 11).
