After running my first search and clicking on one or two filters It took me a while to find the reset button. Not sure if this is because it looks exactly the same as the Search button or its location, but it was my impression that it was not quickly evident that I could reset my search.
When a cluster has been selected from the map, bubbles, or treemap views, that same view becomes irrelevant in terms of visualization. Perhaps this is an opportunity to display a word cloud of the departments or disciplines in an institution or a location? Just a thought.
I like that when you hover over the treemap and when you display bubbles you get a bit more information about each cluster (e.g. number of theses). But when the map display is active, no information is given when hovering over the map clusters so it is likely in many cases users would not necessarily know what they are clicking on. E.g. unclear which bubble is Calgary or Edmonton. In general, it would be nice if, before clicking on any filter, a user would know what they are clicking on in terms of content (e.g. map location names or number of theses are not visible in map). - moved to separate issue (#54)
Sometimes I had to click on a map location twice for it to render.
On occasions, after clicking on Reset, I would get an empty results section.
From the degrees window, clicking on Reset shows an empty thesis list result, not sure if this is intentional.
When selecting a thesis:
My 0.2 cents is that the best place to display the record might be either in a new page or in the frame where the result theses are listed (instead than in a popup frame).
should the link (e.g. doi) to the thesis be shown in the record popup? Right now the user has to go to the full record in order to retrieve it. - moved to separate issue (#55)
I had the same impression that John in terms of going back and forth with result sets but he already described it in length.

I think I understand the observation in the second paragraph and agree. When you constrain your results by clicking on a bubble or box in one of those three views, it displays only that bubble, which is no longer informative. With Word Cloud, it's different. You continue to see more than just the term you select, probably because there are multiple subjects on each object that are being displayed.
I also found sometimes I needed to click on a map twice. Sometimes when switching from another visualization, I think.
Regarding displaying the record in a pop up vs. new page or result frame, I'm not sure which is better, but I find that I usually click through to the full record because I want more information than is on the pop up. That ends up being a lot of clicking for browsing (click 1: pop up, click 2: full record, click 3: close full record tab, click 4: close pop up window). I think the abstract is the one element on the pop up that's not in the result display. Maybe the intermediary pop up is not necessary. Or show the full set of fields in the pop up.
