For the layperson, what are the benefits of using Bazzite over something like ChimeraOS?

I've used ChimeraOS for years, and during the dark times when everyone had given up on Steam Machines it was Alkazar and GamerOS who kept the fire burning.

That eventually became ChimeraOS. During that five year period I had exactly zero problems with ChimeraOS from a reliability standpoint, so I remain a huge ChimeraOS fan and was delighted to hear that the Bazzite team has been working together with them (and Nobara) as well. I'm hearing great stories of upstream collaboration there and that really vibes with our mission. I just wanted to explain that because we're hoping that we can leave the tribalism of the old distro wars behind and are keen to prove that open source is PvE, not PvP. 😄

The biggest difference is Universal Blue images are based off of Fedora Silverblue/Kinoite, which are ostree based systems, and ChimeraOS is based on Arch and uses frzr. The system administration will be different on the hosts, and both can utilize container technology. This is the shortest thing I could write because there's tons of details there but that's the summary.

For people who don't understand what that means: Both systems are image based, and both of them are getting their patches from the same place (or creating them and sharing with others), it's just assembled different. There's no secret sauce to anything, it's all just integrating things that the upstream communities are already publishing.

I installed Bazzite on my Steam Deck but night mode isn't working. I have some night glasses as a workaround but it would be nice if it can be fixed.

It will persist, but it is much cleaner to have it integrated into image.

For reference, this is the fix:
echo net.ipv4.tcp_mtu_probing=1 | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/custom-mtu-probing.conf

"MTU Probing works by sending small packets initially and if they are acknowledged successfully, gradually increasing the packet size until the correct Path MTU can be found.

In Linux, we can modify the value of /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_mtu_probing as follows:

0 - Disabled (default)
1 - Enabled only when PMTU black hole detected
2 - Always enabled, using the initial MSS value of tcp_base_mss"

Just popping by to congratulate the whole team on this effort. I have been running the Gnome version on my Steam Deck for a few days and I am amazed at how well everything runs!

I'll document here two minor problems I've found (please let me know if this is not the place for that!): (1) the sound volume coming out of the steam deck speakers is very low with Bazzite, forcing me to use headphones unless the room is completely silent. It was much louder with Steam OS. (2) Three-finger gestures for Gnome on the steam deck touch screen only work some of the time.
