Grid DetailView expand/collapse

Are there events for showing and hiding a grid's detail view and methods to call in order to expand/collapse them? We are having an issue using a server side externnal pager and when paging through grid items the expand/collapse state of the grid detail view follows the grid's index, not underlying dataitem and would like to build in control of its state.
