What problem does this feature solve?

It might enrich the UI, and it's common feature for blog.

What does the proposed API look like?

Developer can define it in front matter.

This would be great.

Is there a way to use the default theme with the blog plugin instead of the theme? That would be another way to also get the hero image (on the home page at least, not sure about whether this also works for the blog pages) and a bunch of other useful features.

A simple solution? I'm afraid not. But it would be possible if you learn how to develop a theme yourself.
