foreign characters not being handled correctly in main

@gsf I took a look at this but didn't get anywhere. Short of decoding the html entities in main (with something like https://github.com/mathiasbynens/he) before sending them to virtual-hyperscript I don't how to approach this. Happy to take another crack at it though if you want to point me in the right direction.
