If people leave comments with special characters (see https://www.wikipathways.org/index.php/Pathway:WP229 (revision 96002 / 96003) - the webservice function getPathwayHistory throws an SAXParserException in the Java library related to the encoding issue. Even with setting Java to UTF-8, this is not solved.
Any ideas why this happens?

I think this problem is almost as old as WikiPathways itself. We have encoding issues because of some inconsistent solutions. I (vaguely) remember Thomas en Martijn realizing that that was in part caused by work-arounds that were introduced before they decided to work with proper encodings. But not having time for a proper clean-up. Possibly that was really never solved and we should finally do that clean-up?
