Converting the same image into gray-scale or using a median filter onto an image, changes matrix values of the image non-deterministically it seems.
This non-deterministic behavior disturbs the calculation of the shift values (best_w, best_h). The resulting correlation depends on a correct shift such that this bug will result in a failing character detection.
