SCALA is a collaborative project involving nine heritage institutions in Flanders and Brussels (AIDA) with the goal of developing a system for the long-term preservation of born-digital archives with cultural-historical value. The project serves as a proof of concept to test a pilot version of a digital archive depot, which stores archives in generic digital archive containers (information packages) following the OAIS model and the new European standard E-ARK. This open-source repository is being developed by a third-party IT vendor.
As a pioneer in Flanders with the use of E-ARK, SCALA has established an E-ARK working group with external partners to develop a Flemish standard model for information packages that promotes sustainability, system independence, and collaboration.
