abstract: "Although investigations of bilingual effects on cognitive control have proliferated in recent years, results remain inconsistent. A prevailing explanation for these mixed results lies in the ignorance of the complex, multidimensional nature of bilingualism across previous studies. To address this issue, the present study examines bilingual effects from a holistic perspective, accounting for multiple levels of linguistic and non-linguistic factors including individual, interpersonal, social, and ecological. 148 undergraduate Mandarin-English bilinguals were asked to complete the Flanker task and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test to measure conflict monitoring, inhibition, and mental set shifting. Linguistic and non-linguistic characteristics were assessed through questionnaires and interview. Results of stepwise multiple regression analyses revealed that years of English use predicted conflict monitoring, English proficiency predicted conflict monitoring and inhibition, and English-speaking time in class predicted mental set shifting. These results support that factors at multiple levels impact differently on separate dimensions of cognitive control, highlighting a need to better measure and account for linguistic and non-linguistic variability in bilingual samples."

abstract: "A broad and extensive literature has investigated the cognitive consequences of bilingualism on cognitive control. Results from these studies, while controversial, support the conclusion that speaking a second language confers non-linguistic benefits. Whether other related linguistic experiences, such as dialect use, confer similar benefits remains an underexplored and open question. The common use of a diverse range of local dialects across China provides ideal conditions under which to explore this question. Using a dialectally heterogeneous sample of Mandarin-English bilingual young adults (n = 74), the present study investigated whether differences in dialect proficiency impacted on inhibition and attentional control while accounting for variation in language experience. Dialect proficiency was not associated with improved performance on the Simon task, Attention Network Test, or Flanker task, suggesting no benefits in inhibition or attentional control. Considerations for future studies investigating the influence of Chinese dialect experience on cognitive control are discussed."

abstract: "Globally, students demonstrate considerable heterogeneity in academic performance even under similar conditions. While previous systematic reviews have provided a more comprehensive picture of the relationship between different factors and academic performance, none have investigated its relationship with brain activity. Previous evidence supports that the P3, a positive deflection in the electroencephalogram reflecting higher order cognitive processes, may serve as a neuromarker for academic performance. The primary objective of this systematic review was to synthesize existing research on the P3 and academic performance in healthy adults. Searches were conducted using Web of Science, ProQuest, and Scopus databases. In total, four studies met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the present review. Results suggest that P3 latency can serve as a reliable neuromarker for academic performance in healthy adults. However, limited previous studies and methodological differences prevent strong conclusions from being drawn. Further research is needed to establish the predictive capability of the P3 on academic performance. This paper represents the first systematic review on this topic, illuminating our understanding of the relationship between brain activity and academic performance."
