Having support for multiple translations of the buspirate UI is AWESOME.

Situation Today

Today, to change the language, one must first know to start the config menu. However, if the language is not the speaker's native language, the config screen might look similar to:

Opcje konfiguracyjne
 1. Język
 2. Tryb kolorowy ANSI
 3. Tryb ANSI toolbar
 4. Wygaszacz ekranu LCD
 5. Efekt LED
 6. Kolor LED
 7. Jasność LEDów
 x. Wyjście

This is difficult to understand which menu it is, nevermind guessing which option corresponds to selecting a language.

But, even when the user lucks out and gets to the language selection screen, they may be unable to decipher its meaning. Hypothetical example:

语言
1. 英语(美国)
2. 波兰语(波兰)
3. 波斯尼亚语(拉丁语),(波斯尼亚和黑塞哥维那)
4. 意大利语(意大利)
5. 中文(简体)

Is that a language selection screen? I wouldn't know, looking at it. I also wouldn't know which option corresponds to my language, or if the options say, "Permanently Brick Device".

(NOTE: I am not suggesting the above are accurate translations ... just hard to guess what they translate to without knowledge of Mandarin.)

Obviously, BusPirate can do better... a lot better. I'd like to recommend the following change:

  1. At power-up, if there is no configuration file, immediately prompt the user to select a language.
  2. Do not translate the menu used for language selection.
  3. Each option is the term "Language" in the translation's own language, followed by the full IETF native name for that IETF culture code.

Example new language selection screen

This would change the above option into:

1. Language - English (US)
2. Język - polski (Polska)
3. Jezik - bosanski (latinica, Bosna i Hercegovina)
5. Lingua - italiano (Italia)
6. 语言 - 中文(简体)

As a result, each translation option would be immediately discernible to one who uses that language.

There is one downside (limited to us firmware developers) in that we would have to select our language when resetting a device. I think the benefits outweight this inconvenience.

This was fixed in PR #99, with the exception of improving OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience), specifically the automatic prompt for language when no config file exists.

New issue #111 is now opened for the OOBE portion, so closing this as resolved because the language selection screen is now multi-lingual.
