Professor Jeffrey Dickinson

Test dent organization was founded by a group of American University undergraduate students, along with support from the American University Department of Economics, College of Arts and Sciences, and led by Professor Jeffrey Dickinson. Our founding members strongly believed it was a no-brainer to expand access to financial literacy training.

Let's face it, no matter the position in life, or the level of education, almost all of us could benefit from financial literacy training. Part of our motivation was also that many undergradute students, especially at American University, are interested in having a direct connection to the communities around us as part of an effort to improve social well-being. Dollar scholars is designed to bridge that gap, and help students interested in teaching financial literacy engage with the broader DC, Maryland, and Virginia community in a structured environment, while adding important experience to their development.

Jeff is an adjunct professor at American University. Jeff’s interest in financial literacy
came about through reading the latest research on the financial literacy gap between men and
women. After reading deeply about gender and financial literacy and having conversations with
American University’s (A.U.) students, Arjun, Shirley, Danny, Tommy, Ivan, Devin, and others,
he collectively decided it would be a good idea to create an organization that would link A.U.
students who want to volunteer to teach financial literacy to adults in D.C. Jeff hopes that the
P.R.J. Dollar Scholars initiative will be well-implemented by conducting analysis using real
survey data to measure the outcomes of individuals who participate in the program. Jeff
envisions location and group-specific content for the financial literacy curriculum down the road.
Jeff grew up in D.C. and completed graduate school after 7 years in Geneva, Switzerland.
He is passionate about effectuating change using a scientific approach, meaning interventions
and policies backed by peer-reviewed research and utilizing qualitative and quantitative
techniques to measure particular policies’ success. Jeff teaches microeconomics,
macroeconomics, economic development, and econometrics. His research so far has focused on agricultural development in poor countries such as Peru and Tanzania, with a specific
concentration on gender. He has consulted for the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund,
and the International Food Policy Research Institute. He lives in D.C. with his partner, Leslie,
and their dog, Timea.
