Compiling & Running ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To compile the benchmarks, please use the provided makefile. It should be invoked as such: make COMP=X Where X represents a choice from the targets lsited below: cray : for compilation on a Cray machine using the Cray compiler. craypgi : for compilation on a Cray machine using PGI as packaged for Cray. pgi : for compilation using the PGI compiler. hmpp : for compilation with the CAPS compiler. If you use another compiler, you will need to either compile by hand or add the relevant section to the makefile. To run the benchmarks, execute the file oa. Two command line options can be given: --datasize <X> --reps <Y> X is the desired datasize in BYTES. This is the maximum datasize that will be used. The default is 1048576 bytes. Y is the desired number of repetitions for each benchmarks. The default is 10 repetitions. 2. The benchmarks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The benchmarks are divided into three section: Level0, Level1 and Applications. Level0 benchmarks mainly measure the speed of operation of various OpenACC functions. Note that the SlicedD2H and SlicedH2D benchmarks use non-contiguously allocated memory which is not allowed by the standard but MAY be of use. Some of the results are reported as the time for device execution minus the time for the host execution. This result may have a negative mean if the times are relatively close but with some variation. This does not indicate an error. ContigD2H & ContigH2D measure the time to copy a contiguous chunk of data to/from the device. SlicedD2H & SlicedH2D measure the time to copy a non-contiguous chunk of data, ie a column of a 2D array to/from the device. Kernels If & Parallel If measure the difference in time between executing a simple loop on the host and on the host by way of the if clause. Parallel Private & Parallel 1stPrivate measure the overhead of privatising or 1st-privatising a chunk of data. Parallel Combined & Kernels Combined measure the difference between using statements of the form (kernels shown): #pragma acc kernels #pragma acc loop & #pragma acc kernels loop Parallel Invocation & Kernels Invocation measure the overhead of invoking a simple kernel. Update measures the cost of performing an update from device to host inside a data region. Parallel Reduction & Kernels Reduction measure the overhead of performing a reduction. Level1 benchmarks measure the performance of some BLAS-type kernels. These are OpenACC ports of the Polybench and Polybench/GPU kernels, please see information in NOTICE regarding the license for these. Applications are real application codes. Again, please see information in NOTICE regarding the license for these. 3. Output format ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Output is written to standard out and is of the format: COMPILER Benchmark_Name Mean_Runtime Std_Deviation COMPILER is selected based on C pre-processor macros, if you compiler using a compiler I have not tested, the default "COMPILER" will be used. The mean runtime and standard deviation are reported in micro-seconds. The OpenMP timer is used for portability and therefore reports time taken to return to the host.
