User Account and Authentication Issues

What can I do if my account Creation did not complete?

User should try creating their account by using Firefox instead of IE

What can a user do if they forget their password?

(note: the PCMDI gateway is being retired soon - use the ESGF Node http://pcmdi9.llnl.gov )

Go to the pcmdi gateway: http://pcmdi3.llnl.gov/esgcet/home.htm , select the Login tab and put in user name then select Forgot PW which will send an e-mail back to the user allowing them to reset their password.

I can't login to the pcmdi3.llnl.gov ESG web server because it keeps

asking to select a certificate to use for identification, do I need to re- register?

Some users see 'Account is locked' when logging into the portal. The problem is that the user hasn't clicked the 'confirm registration' link in the emailed response, possibly because his system has blocked the email. The solution is to send a request to one of our pcmdi3 administrators ( [email protected]] , [email protected]] ) and request that they resend a confirmation request.

MyProxy authentication failed. Why?

Begin by referring to the " MyProxyLogon " section of the following link; http://pcmdi3.llnl.gov/esgcet/help/download-help.htm . If after following the "Trouble Shooting MyProxy " steps, contact the Help Desk.

Data Access Issues

I retrieved inmcm4 piControl data (tas, rlut, rsut). The data files

appear truncated - only a small fraction of the estimated size (this was not a network outage as I tried retrieving them twice, and got identical file sizes both times)

The PCMDI3 gateway data server, GDO, was down.

I am having trouble downloading CNRM-CM5 data

The problem was that CNRM had republished some datasets after having modified the THREDDS dataset root entries, without unpublishing the datasets first. Specifically, it appears that they replaced the single dataset root esg_dataroot with four dataset roots esg_dataroot1, ..., esg_dataroot4. Then the gateway has duplicate URLs for many files. When a download is requested, the gateway picks one of the URLs arbitrarily by some mysterious mechanism. If the URL is invalid the download fails. The solution, report this to a pcmdi3 administrator who must look into the issue. It may be resolved by identifying and removing those duplicates.

I registered at the PCMDI and was able to download several files.

Recently I noticed that the list of available data is different depending on which EG server I browse

[This issue may have more than one problem/solution]

  1. There is a problem with the search capability in the current gateways. We are aware that the view of the datasets is not consistent across gateways, and are working to resolve the problem. The NCC datasets have not been released for general public use yet. We are waiting for NCC to give us permission to distribute them. Please check the status updates on the PCMDI gateway for further information.
  2. This same problem often occurs if you are using multiple OpenIDs to login to different ESGF Gateways. You should only need to use a single OpenID -- the one with which you registered for the NCC group. You should passed your query onto a PCMDI Gateway administrator to investigate, further. It would help if you can state the OpenID you are using.

I am frustrated trying to find data sets that had previously been

visible...

... Today's foray was for inmcm4 amip data. In the left hand menu I selected the model but the experiment (amip) was not listed. I've run into this before so I just waded my way through the available files in the main section and sure enough the amip was there. Other inconsistencies I've found include GISS-E2-H does not list historical monthly in the left hand menu but it is available in the main menu and one other (I don't remember now which model) where I needed monthly pr but only 3hr and daily were shown in the left menu however monthly was there in the main menu

This occurs when a publish/unpublish/re-publish sequence. The search interface looses some information because the complete relationship tree is not entirely re-created. There is a fix for this in version 1.3 of the gateway code.

Internal server error

Error access BADC CMIP5 data with Firefox 3.6 ...

...Hello, This mail to report an error I have when I try to access BADC CMIP5 data with Firefox 3.6. when I click on "Download files for this collection", I enter my OpenID, then I get the error message below: "An internal server error has occurred. The problem has been logged and the administrator notified." I see in the "Data Access - Getting Started" document that there is an issue being worked on concerning blank webpage. I have this problem too

  1. Close all browser windows or otherwise clear your cookies.
  2. Log on to the Gateway you accessed previously with the OpenID, i.e. the one in which you registered for CMIP5 data.
  3. Select your data as before.

or

  1. Do not select the button "Download Files", instead double click on the dataset you want then follow the screens selections and double click on the "Download Files" under the Summary Tab. There appears to be a bug with the "Download Files" button that occurs from time to time. This is exclusive to the ESG Gateway not P2P.

If you continue to see server errors please send as much details as you can to a pcmdi3 administrator and we will assist further. The problem may be related to a users approved data access controls.

Data Quality Issues

INMCM4 hus issue...

...I have done some analysis by using the data from CMIP5. I found that the specific humidity (hus) field from the historical simulation of INMCM4 has some problem. The data file name is as 'hus_Amon_inmcm4_historical_r1i1p1_196001-196912.nc'. When I draw the monthly filed of hus after the period of Jan 1885, it seemed as masiac. As I have successfully done similar works with other models' results (6 model), I do not think the problem was on me

We are aware of the quality issues surrounding INM MC4 data and we are working with the authors to remedy the problems. Unfortunately, we have no time estimate to give you when this will be resolved. (July 2011)

The grid area of CNRMCM5 (areacella_fx_CNRM-CM5_historical_r0i0p0.nc)

seemed wrong

This was true. The corrected data was re-published with version 20110718

Help understanding the data

Do all CMIP5 models use the same calendar?

No, some use 360 day calendars, others use 365 day calendars, others Gregorian. You will need to us the calendar attributes of the NetCDF files to understand the calendar used for a particular model (see http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/documents/cf-conventions/1.6/ch04s04.html#calendar for more details).
