Second, Accelerate’s ideas are interesting because it is 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

How do you measure the performance of your software team? The authors settle on four measures, adapted from the principles of lean manufacturing.

The four metrics are as follows:

𝟭. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 — the average amount of time it takes from the time code is checked in to the version control system to the point in time where it is deployed to production.

𝟮. 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 — the number of times deploys to production occur in a time period.

𝟯. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 — how long it takes to resolve or rollback an error in production.

𝟰. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 — what percentage of changes to production (software releases and configuration changes) fail.

How to make organization high performant?

• 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 (𝗖𝗜/𝗖𝗗) 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 — which is a bit of a catch-all recommendation for a bunch of best practices. These include adjacent things like:

• 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 — the majority of companies that are high performers work on trunk-based development — that is, that work directly on master, and have few if any long-lived feature branches.

Regular meetings with your employees are much important part of every relationship one needs to develop. This helps in enabling trust, but also in resolving conflicts in a team. When we did not do regular sync-s with our employees in a team, often we will not recognize what is actually happening with our people or in team dynamics. In addition, this kind of meeting gives you an opportunity to develop better relations with your people in a team.

If we talk about some 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 here:

• Do it 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 (every 2 weeks e.g.,).
• Agree on 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 (don't just discuss things).
• Try to really 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, and what are actually their pain points (they will be grateful for that), even if those are private things.
• 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆: listen closely and express understanding and appreciation for the context and viewpoint of the other person.
• Discuss 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: sometimes, have a higher-level conversation about their career and happiness. When they aim for a promotion, discuss the path forward.
• Be 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱: be open to reverse feedback. Knowing what your team thinks of your management style is helpful.
• 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗰: a collaborative document helps to maintain action items, what's decided, what's due, etc. It helps you plan future 1:1s and functions as an archive.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘅 is a simple decision-making tool that helps you make the distinction between tasks that are important, not important, urgent, and not urgent. It splits tasks into four boxes that prioritize which tasks you should focus on first and which you should delegate or delete.

It is created by 𝗗𝘄𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗. 𝗘𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, American military officer, but popularized by Stephen R Covey in his famous book "7 Habits of Highly Effective People". How it works, it has actually four quadrants on two dimensions, is something urgent or important. Urgent taks means that it requires immediate attention and important task means that those activities have an outcome that leads to us achieving goals.

The four quadrants:

𝟭. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 & 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗗𝗼): this task requires immediate attention, which means "do it now" (e.g., something you can to below 2mins).

𝟮. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 & 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲): these tasks have not fixed deadline, but they bring you to your long-term goals. You should spend the most time here.

𝟯. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲): these tasks need to be done, but they usually drain your energy. Try to delegate them as they are not important.

𝟰. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆 & 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲): these activities only distract you from your goals and not add anything to your value, e.g., watching TV and similar. Try to limit them.
