De-politicize Taiwan's name #83
base: master
Are you sure you want to change the base?
Conversation
Addresses issue #81 |
whatever name is used it is political and someone will be upset - the ISO 3166 standard uses the 'Province of China' suffix - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_3166_country_codes and elsewhere |
Certain names are guaranteed to inflame tensions. Putting "Province of China" in the text makes it unsuitable for exposure in user interfaces in the vast majority of the world. "Taiwan" is neutral enough worldwide. Usability should triumph here. Eg, the wikipedia page for Taiwan is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan |
If the ISO standard changes the label for Taiwan, I'll update nv-i18n accordingly. As I'm Japanese, I believe I know the situation and history of Taiwan much better and have a stronger opinion than average people who live outside East Asia. Especially, as you may know, Japan and Taiwan has a good relationship. Nevertheless, rather, all the more, I think I should keep the solid criterion on choices of country names. Not only Taiwan but also some other countries/regions have a dispute on country/region names. If you want to change the situation, please appeal to ISO and come back here again. |
Thing is it isn't acceptable in China (PRC) to refer to just Taiwan and a lot of people do not want to upset China. |
Modern JDKs can't compile to 1.5
Tanzania no longer has "United" in the name
Giving up on minimal changes to pom. Too hard getting these old creaky plugins to work with the latest JDK.
Unfortunately "Province of China" is not acceptable in the western world, where my customers are. This is an english-language library. There are less touchy issues with other names as well; I'm not sure most westerners can pick out the difference between "Korea, Republic of" and "Korea, Democratic People's Republic of". I need text I can render in a UI, so I guess I'm stuck maintaining a fork: https://github.com/stickfigure/nv-i18n-safe
I'd love to figure out how we can avoid this, perhaps some sort of "Human Name" field? |
