Design Goals and Anti Goals

Media playback instead of media management

Emby does a fine job managing artwork, metadata, etc for a media library. My only problems with it revolve around playback. As such, Snowby has no plans to support features that manage the underlying media library.

Assume the environment is configured for speed

Emby supports a large number of playback devices and options. Snowby is tightly focused to improve the playback experience. All media is assumed to be hosted on the same network as the client and will be direct streamed.

Make the hardware do the work

To support features like HDR passthrough, Snowby relies on the mpv media player. This also provides an improved subtitle display experience, especially when viewing anime.

Easy media navigation on large displays

My main development target for Snowby is a 65" 4K television. I designed the UI around sitting on my couch and controlling a Windows PC using Unified Remote on my phone.
