allow writing documentation in MD instead of HTML here

This repo would IMHO be slightly easier to contribute to if it used MD instead of HTML for doc (like this).

I've never done it, but my understanding is that Jekyll can transform MD into HTML that's identical to what you have here today.

Just a thought.
