python-markdown is more picky about markdown syntax conformity than Github's cmark-based parser.
This is the current standard this repo's docs use.

@oraNod and I discussed adding a small mkdocs site for the release docs in a DAWGs meeting a little while ago. This makes the docs easier to consume and is helpful for the release manager.
