Description

Check whether return value of update method has a to_str method (used for implicit conversions), rather than just if it's non-nil.

Motivation and Context

The scheduler visual run output feature introduced in #1916 expects that users either return a string or nil from the update method.

However, if an existing user was not aware of the change, they may not have an explicit return. As a result of Ruby's implicit returns, they might return a value that is non-nil yet can not be converted to a string, leading to an error.

How Has This Been Tested?

(Follow the steps in #1916 if unsure how to set up a scheduler)

returning a string

module Updater
    def self.update(course)
        out = ""
        out << "my output\n"

        out
    end
end

returning nil

module Updater
    def self.update(course)
        nil
    end
end
Screenshot 2024-05-23 at 08 17 00

returning non-nil value that can't be converted to a string

module Updater
    def self.update(course)
        true
    end
end

Note: true has a to_s method but NOT a to_str method. So implicit conversions fail.

Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The recent changes focus on enhancing the robustness and clarity of the visual_run method in the SchedulersController. Specifically, the method now checks if output can be converted to a string using respond_to?(:to_str) instead of merely checking its truthiness. Additionally, documentation has been updated to stress the importance of explicitly returning nil in the update method of a scheduler to avoid unintended implicit returns in Ruby.

Changes

File Path Change Summary
app/controllers/schedulers_controller.rb Updated the visual_run method to check if output responds to to_str instead of checking its truthiness.
docs/features/schedulers.md Clarified the behavior of returning values in the update method, emphasizing the need to explicitly return nil.

    • @coderabbitai modularize this function.
  • PR comments: Tag @coderabbitai in a new PR comment to ask questions about the PR branch. For the best results, please provide a very specific query, as very limited context is provided in this mode. Examples:
    • @coderabbitai generate interesting stats about this repository and render them as a table.
    • @coderabbitai show all the console.log statements in this repository.
    • @coderabbitai read src/utils.ts and generate unit testing code.
    • @coderabbitai read the files in the src/scheduler package and generate a class diagram using mermaid and a README in the markdown format.

Note: Be mindful of the bot's finite context window. It's strongly recommended to break down tasks such as reading entire modules into smaller chunks. For a focused discussion, use review comments to chat about specific files and their changes, instead of using the PR comments.
