QUICKSTART

Unpack the source and build with 'bjam release'. Copy the executables to a
location in your PATH, or add the build directory to your PATH.

To attack a single ciphertext:

$ elgamalmgr cc cryptosystems/test.elg -p1024 -b512
$ elgamalmgr cm cryptosystems/test.msg -m40 -c cryptosystems/test.elg
$ mimattack -n hashmim -c cryptosystems/test.elg -b40 cryptosystems/test.msg

To duplicate the thesis results:

$ ./attack.pl --n all --c s72 --b 32 46

This will take a very long time. You may prefer to run in stages:

$ ./attack.pl --n all --c s72 --b 32
$ ./attack.pl --n all --c s72 --b 34
...

REQUIREMENTS

The code was designed to run on a 64-bit GNU/Linux system. In particular, the
getopt functions from unistd.h are used, and /dev/urandom is read to seed the
random number generator. The programs should also compile and run on a 32-bit
system.

Build system:
Boost.Build V2 m12

Libraries:
glibc 2.7 (earlier versions should also work)
GMP 4.2.x
Tokyo Cabinet 1.3.x

In Ubuntu and other Debian based distributions, installing the following
packages should install the necessary dependencies.

 $ apt-get install libboost-dev libgmp-dev libtokyocabinet-dev

There used to be a bjam package and a boost-build package, but bjam is now part
of libboost-dev.

PROGRAMS

mimattack (source mimattackmain.cc) is the main program used to run the
attacks.  The *Attack classes implement the different attacks and attack
variations.

elgamalmgr is used to create cryptosystems and ciphertexts which will be
vulnerable to the attack.

elgamaltime, elgamaltest, factortest, randomfac, and dlogtest are designed to
test various components.

splitProb determines splitting probabilities experimentally; a faster version
with better factoring algorithms is distributed separately under the GPL
license. This was done to simplify licensing.

modExp computes the modular exponentations required by an attack without
storing the results. Attack variations which do not take significantly longer
than modExp should be considered optimal.

createMessages.pl creates messages of different sizes for a given cryptosystem
using elgamalmgr, and attack.pl runs mimattack on those messages, collects
results, and stores them to datafiles. Cryptosystems should be named with the
.elg extension; the Perl scripts store messages and results to a directory with
the same name with the extension stripped.  These scripts also assume that
mimattack and elgamalmgr are in PATH.

LIBRARIES

lib/ElgamalCryptosystem.cc implements "plain" ElGamal encryption. This should
never be used as the model for an actual implementation. Note that these
attacks do not show that ElGamal is broken; they show that a certain way of
implementing ElGamal is broken.

lib also contains a class for storing and creating integers with their prime
factorization, and a discrete log implementation using the Pohlig-Hellman and
Pollard Rho algorithms.
