Summary

The project plan was first presented in the October workshop in Beijing. Notes from the workshop can be found [here](Beijing project kick off workshop) and slides presenting the project plan can be found here.

Our aim is to carry out a field trial in the 2nd year of the C-Aware project. In this field trial, digital displays will be used to show visualisations on three sites:

  • Horizon in University of Nottingham
  • Computer Laboratory in University of Cambridge
  • China Mobile research labs in Beijing

On each site, three types of digital display will be used:

  • Large public displays (for all employees to view the energy consumption of the team)
  • Personal desktop displays (for team leaders to view the energy consumption of their team)
  • Personal mobile displays (for individual employees to view their own energy consumption)

Each site will monitor energy data using its own infrastructure. We expect China Mobile to use M2M to monitor energy use, while Cambridge and Nottingham will use a combination of existing building management systems and commercial energy monitoring equipment. The aim is for Cambridge and Nottingham to acquire monitoring infrastructure that is similar to China Mobile's M2M.

Energy monitors on each site will send data to a hub on each site. Each site will have a web-based database; the site hub will send data to its web-based database.

The digital displays on each site will request data from their energy monitor database.

Project stages

  1. Testing monitoring architecture (month 4-9) 2. Consultation with University of Nottingham ETC (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/etc/) and Estates (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/estate/) regarding current monitoring capabilities of University of Nottingham and local workplaces 2. Acquiring suitable sensors and sensor hub (e.g. M2M module) – check compatibility/portability with China 2. Deploying and testing sensor infrastructure in test site (Horizon Research)

  2. Testing data store for monitoring (month 4-12) 2. Developing schema for data store 2. Deploying data store on suitable web platform 2. Linking sensor infrastructure to data store and testing scalability of data store for long-term monitoring

  3. Prototype user interfaces (month 7-15) 2. Develop working prototypes of UI1, UI2 and UI3 (without control functionality) 2. Rapid iteration of prototypes based on many short test deployments at test sites (student halls of residence at University of Nottingham, Horizon Research, China Mobile Research) 2. Internationalise interfaces

  4. Test control architecture (month 10-15) 2. Acquire and integrate suitable control hardware with monitoring hardware 2. Modify data store to support control 2. Test control functionality (reliability and response speed)

  5. Prototype enhanced UI3 (month 13-15) 2. Modify UI3 to enable control functionality 2. Rapid iteration of UI3 prototype in consultation with various potential end-users

  6. Formal field trials (month 16-21) 2. Determine observation/data capture method + sites 2. Installation of monitoring/control infrastructure + UI devices on sites 2. Pre-trial interviews/focus groups with users 2. Trial 2. Post-trial interviews/focus groups with users
