2021 update: These plugins are considered to be discretionary and need to go on Simeon's discretionary spending Excel file which gets approved on Thursday mornings. Darcy submits the statements of need (SofN), technology risk assessment (TRA) and web accessibility (WA) triage forms for approval, although anyone can submit these. Not all statements of need require TRAs or WAs. IT Governance will let you know if one is required. Instead of waiting, you can also submit the TRAs and WAs at the time you submit the SofN. List Debra Howell as the Library's ITSG representative.
- Enter information on discretionary spending spreadsheet.
- Use account: "L85" (Description: "CUL-IT General")
- Business purpose: Plugins enabling critical functionality on multiple library websites.
- Slack or email Simeon for approval
- Go to IT Governance to submit SofN, TRA and/or WA.
- Follow up with Rachel Brill once SofN, TRA and/or WA are approved so she can process the payment.
Draw Attention https://itgov.it.cornell.edu/sons/2972
Abstract: Students/patrons utilize the library for many of it's services and resources, including physical materials in our stacks and spaces for studying or meeting with groups. Draw Attention allows us to provide interactive floor maps to meet this need.
Explanation (Issue/Opportunity): Through user research, including surveys, interviews and analyzing website usage, it was identified that floor maps for our unit libraries are important to our users. Many of our libraries are large and users need a way to easily find resources, such as a service point, book on a stack using a call number, or a space to study or meet with colleagues.
Solution: Draw Attention allows us to provide interactive and accessible (compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA) floor maps for several unit libraries and it's compatible with SmartDraw (previously purchased and renewed) used to create the floor maps.
Elementor Pro https://itgov.it.cornell.edu/sons/2912
Abstract: Our library unit sites are using Elementor Pro for site templates, interface design and content editing.
Explanation (Issue/Opportunity): The Library maintains several applications and websites, including 16 unit library sites. Elementor Pro allows our designers/developers to more easily create and maintain site templates and interface design elements in WordPress. It also allows our content contributors to more easily create, edit and maintain their own content.
Solution: After careful evaluation of several options, it was determined that Elementor Pro (https://elementor.com) fits our needs and is cost effective.
SmartDraw https://itgov.it.cornell.edu/sons/2742
Abstract: SmartDraw allows us to create floor maps for each of the unit libraries with outputs that result in similar styling and the same icons, colors and legends for all libraries. SmartDraw works with the DrawAttention plugin to make it interactive.
Explanation (Issue/Opportunity): Through user research, including surveys, interviews and analyzing website usage, it was identified that floor maps are important to our users. As a result, we researched our options in creating and displaying floor maps in a similar or unified way for all unit sites. We determined that SmartDraw is compatible with DrawAttention to make the floor maps interactive and accessible-compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA.
Solution: UX team has identified SmartDraw as a low-cost solution that meets our needs.
Timeline plugin: Need: We are in the process of migrating two dozen library Drupal websites to Wordpress with a common theme to reduce time and other costs associated with their development and maintenance. There is a need for a timeline view of some of the content on these sites, but many Wordpress plugins do not comply with the accessibility standards of University Policy 5.12 and cannot be made to comply without also incurring significant development and maintenance costs for the library.
Solution: Staff have identified the WP Timeline plugin (https://codecanyon.net/item/wp-timeline-responsive-vertical-and-horizontal-timeline-plugin/17664690) as a low cost (currently $32.50/year) plugin that will likely fit our needs and fully comply with University Policy 5.12.
FacetWP: Need: We have migrated two dozen library Drupal websites to Wordpress with a common theme to reduce time and other costs associated with their development and maintenance. On these sites, there is an onoging need for the ability to have more control over the display of resources on the site, such as advanced filtering and sorting options for searches of site content.
Solution: Staff have identified the FacetWP plugin (https://facetwp.com/) as a low cost solution that fits our needs.
RSS Aggregator: Need: We have migrated two dozen library Drupal websites to Wordpress with a common theme to reduce time and other costs associated with their development and maintenance. There is a ongoing need for a flexible and configurable RSS aggregator for the site to enable critical functionality, such as retrieving new books from the library catalogue, syndicating content across these sites, etc.
Solution: Staff have identified the WP RSS Aggregator plugin (https://www.wprssaggregator.com/) as a low cost solution that fits our needs.
Advanced Custom Fields Pro: Need: Many of our most used websites, including the main library website at www.library.cornell.edu as well as over a dozen unit sites include customized, dynamic functionality that with a tool, could be developed and maintained without extensive programming needed.
Solution: Advanced Custom Fields Pro (https://www.advancedcustomfields.com) allows us to quickly create and easily maintain core features on most heavily used websites.
